Food was often an outdoor affair as well. “It was common for the dads to help cook up a barbecue,” Stevie says. “We would usually have sausages in bread with tomato sauce (ketchup), mini frankfurters and party pies, which are very small meat pies.” A highlight of dessert was always “fairy bread,” which is buttered white bread covered in a type of sprinkles known as hundreds and thousands. Stevie also remembers looking forward to a specially themed birthday cake, often picked from The Australian Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book. “I usually got the maypole or the rabbit, and my brother usually got the soccer field.”

As she was opening her gifts, her friends played Pass the Parcel until everyone got a present of their own, perhaps a yo-yo or Matchbox car. At the end of the party, everyone got to take home a party bag filled with mixed lollies (candy).

Stevie recalls that her eighteenth birthday was a very important one, partially because it was during her last year of secondary school. Like many of her friends, she celebrated during the evening with music and dancing at home.

Barbecue parties are very popular in Australia, where the weather is often ideal for an outdoor celebration.
